You may know some ways to speed up your PC such as disk defragmenter, disk cleanup and things like that. The following provides you more possible methods to speed up a windows XP computer.

(1) Shutdown Dr. Watson:

Dr. Watson is a Windows XP tool for analyzing computer crash. When windows application programs crash, Dr.Watson will pop up automatically and will save the relative wrong contents into dump files to programmers for a further analysis by default. However, recording dump files is useless for common users while the whole procedure will take you a long time and occupy mush disk space. To shutdown Dr. Watson, you can follow these steps:

Open registry editor -> find the key “Auto” under “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionAeDebug” and then change the key value to 0 -> press F5 key to refresh your computer.

(2) Start up DMA mode of CD-ROM:

To achieve the goal, please follow the below steps:

Right-click My Computer -> Choose Properties -> Select Hardware -> Choose Device Manger -> unfold IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers -> Double-click Primary/Secondary IDE channel -> Select Advanced Settings and check whether DMA function has started up

(3) Close all unnecessary devices:

The system always tries its best to prepare drivers for all devices at the expense of slowing down the computer and much resource being occupied. In such a case, you can stop some devices, which are not in use, such as PCMCIA card, infrared devices, printer port (LPT1) and things like that. To perform the action, you can follow these steps:

Right-click My Computer -> Choose Properties -> Select Hardware -> Choose Device Manger -> Double-click the devices that you want to stop -> Choose Device usage -> Select Do not use this device ->Restart the computer.

Do you want to improve PC speed within seconds? The following will show you some tips:

Tip 1: Close error report

When there is something wrong with applications, the system will pop up error report windows automatically. In fact, this error report is not meaningful at all for common computer users so it is recommended to close error report. To fulfill this, you can follow these steps:

Click start -> click Run -> type gpedit.msc into the dialog box -> click Computer Configuration -> select Administrative Templates -> select System -> select Error Reporting -> double-click Configuration Error Reporting -> select Disable.

Tip 2: cancel Pop Delay

Cancelling Pop delay will speed up your PC to a certain extent and the steps are the following:

Open registry editor -> change the key value of “MenuShowDelay” under “HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop” from 400 to 0 -> press F5 key to refresh your computer.

Tip 3: clean up prefetch files

System’s read-set helps speeding up the system but after running a long time, files in prefetch folder will accumulate a lot and cost the system a longer time to search at startup. Some applications even create files of dead link in prefetch folder which will add the burden to computer; therefore, cleaning up all files in prefetch folder regularly under Windows system folder is necessary.

Tip 4: close autoplay function

Whenever we insert a CD or USB Mobile Hard Disk into the computer, the system will scan the CD or USB Mobile Hard Disk once and prompt you whether you want to play files in them. If it is a large-sized CD or USB Mobile Hard Disk, the system will cost you a lot time to scan all files. In such a case, we can close auto play function by operating the below steps:

Click start -> click Run -> type gpedit.msc into the dialog box -> click Computer Configuration -> select Administrative Templates -> select System -> double-click Turn off autoplay -> select Enable -> select All drives in the drop-down list.

Playing games online with other people is great fun… but when they start to lag, it’s a different story altogether. “Lagging” is a major problem for many gamers and fortunately, it’s actually quite easy to fix.

The term ‘lagging’ is actually used to describe how a game can be slow to keep up with your movements. Online, this problem is normally caused by a slow Internet connection which causes a delay in the amount of data that can be transferred to your PC, thus slowing the whole online game down. Unfortunately, “lag” is a big problem for all participants of an online game and should be fixed as soon as possible.

To stop “lag” from occurring, you really need to fix the causes of this problem. A lagging game is caused by the way that the Internet is relied on for all the data that the game constantly needs. Every second, 100′s of pieces of data are needed to help the game run and the reason why it “lags” is because it cannot read all the data & settings it needs whenever it needs them.

One of the best things you can do to stop in-game lagging is something that not many gamers know about. It’s often the case that your Internet connection will be fine, but the reason why lag will be caused will be down to the settings that your computer needs to run the game. These settings tell it everything from which map your playing to how many players are on your server, and they are all stored inside a part of Windows called the “registry”.

The registry is home to many settings for your computer, all of which are vital for helping it run smoothly. Most modern games have 1,000′s of files to help them run, and it’s often the case that computers cannot read these files, making them lag. This is a huge problem which even the most advanced of computers cannot avoid… and in order to fix it, you should try using a ‘registry cleaner’.

What happens on most Windows PCs is that a lot of the registry settings that computers need are saved in the wrong way & corrupted. This causes them to become unreadable, which makes Windows play your games slower. To fix this, registry cleaners have been invented to clean through all the damaged registry settings and fix the ones that are causing problems. They work by scanning through all the registry settings on your PC, identifying any of the damaged ones that are on there and fixing them. They are actually very effective at making games faster and are easy to use.

Your computer spends a long time on completing the startup procedure? Don’t worry! The following provides you 4 methods to shorten computer procedure at startup.

(1) Stop those unnecessary programs and optional Windows components at startup:

Your computer will take you much longer time to complete startup procedure with more and more programs being installed. Many programs will add themselves into startup, which means that your computer has to run them immediately when you boot the computer. That way, your speed of booting your computer will definitely slow down. In such a case, you can follow these steps to remove the unnecessary programs at startup: Start -> Run -> type Msconfig in the dialog box and then press Enter key -> select Startup option -> Disable those unnecessary startup programs and optional Windows components -> Restart your computer.

(2) Disable unnecessary services:

There are many programs and services being imported to system memory to control functions of the system. But some of those services are useless to us while they occupy much of memory and system resources. If we disable them, we can save 70MB memory at most and then your system’s speed will increase accordingly. You can realize the point by the following steps: Start -> Run -> type services.msc -> disable those unnecessary services.

(3) Modify registry entries to reduce the time spent on waiting for progress bar:

We’ll see a progress bar at startup and we can quicken it by modifying registry entries. You can follow these steps: Start -> Run -> type regedit -> change the key value of EnablePrefetcher which under the path “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerMemory ManagementPrefetchParameters” to “1″.

(4) shorten the time spent on waiting for scanning disk:

When windows log has record of shutdown computer abnormally, the system will scan the disk automatically. By default, the computer will wait 10 seconds before scanning each sub region. Then it will cost you much time and we can cancel the time for waiting to scan. To fulfill the process, you can follow these steps: Start -> Run -> type chkntfs /t:0 and then press Enter key.
